Trenchless Lateral Reinstatements: Robotically Restoring Tie-Ins

Trenchless Lateral Reinstatements maximize the benefits and cost savings of trenchless sewer lining by allowing the reconnection of lateral lines without the need to dig. While we like to think of pipes on their own, they often are connected to other pipes.  During the process of sewer lining, these connections are covered over by the new liner material.

Prior to Trenchless Lateral Reinstatements, each tie in would need to be dug up so that the liner material could be removed and flow between the two pipes could be re-established.  With new robotic tools, we are able to insert machinery into the sewer line that will cut out the excess liner material and reinstate the line without needing to dig – saving you time and money by skipping the digging.

Robotic Lateral Reinstatement Benefits

  • Reestablishes connections following the lining of a pipe
  • Skip the digging to save time as well as money on labor costs
  • Avoid the costly above ground-repairs for access points

How Does It Work?

  1. Camera Inspection To Identify Tie-In Points
A camera is advanced in the line to locate the points in the liner where the lateral pipes tie into the pipe that has been lined.  These points are visible inside of the sewer line to trained inspectors who are able to identify the signature of a tie-in within the profile of the lining material.
  2. Seal Between Pipes Knocked Out
Once the tie-in points have been identified,  a machine that looks similar to a heavy duty sewer snake with a heavy grade chain at the end  is used to break the seal between the two pipes. However, while the two pipes are now connected once again, the connection is rough and would impede flow.
  3. Reinstatements Robotically Smoothed For Clean Flow
Next, a sewer robot is advanced down the line.  Using an on-board camera and cutting arm, a trained operator then smooths the edges of the cut to ensure smooth flow between the lateral and the pipe that has been lined.

What Are The Benefits Of Trenchless Lateral Reinstatements?

  • Skip The Digging
Because our lining material creates a barrier between moisture and the substrate of the manhole, the lifespan of the manhole is extended by avoiding daily wear and tear.  In addition the epoxy coating structurally reinforces weaknesses and minor issues within the substrate.
  • Save Time and Money
Manhole lining creates a barrier between the substrate and the environment which stop corrosion caused by hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) and microbes.   Because lining fills in cracks and breaks in the manhole it stops inflow and infiltration in the system.
  • Avoid above-ground damage
By skipping the digging you save on both labor costs as well as the additional costs to rehabilitate damage caused by the removal of a manhole that is required during conventional excavation methods.  Because the rehabilitation of a manhole can be done quickly, you reduce downtime headaches and associated costs.
