ABC 10 - We want to give you - the consumer - the power to make the right decision when it comes to hiring a contractor.   So we spoke to an expert about the different types, what qualities to look for, and the red flags to be aware of before you pay a contractor to make permanent changes to your home.

1.  If you are hiring a contractor, it’s usually a significant investment in your home.

2.  It’s very important to make sure your contractor is licensed, insured, and bonded.

3.  Check them out online. There’s lots of review sites like Yelp, Angie’s List, and Google that have reviews on these contractors.

4.  Watch out for dispatch fees, trip fees.  You should be able to get a contractor out to your house to give you a free estimate in most cases. 

There is definitely a time for a general contractor/handyman or a specialist.  Specialists cut cost by lower overhead - saving you time and money
